EgyptAir: 195 passengers survive airport accident in Cairo

EgyptAirplane carrying 195 passengers hit a lamp-post while preparing to takeoff from Cairo International Airport (CAI) to Hurghada Red Sea resort,east Egypt, on Friday.
Thepilot of the Airbus 330 was able to control the aircraft and allpassengers were rescued and taken safely to CAI's transit hall, a seniorofficial said.
"The accident resulted in minor damage to theleft wing of the aircraft," Chairman of Egypt's Civil Aviation Authority(ECAA) Sameh Hefni told KUNA.
"A technical team from theMinistry of Civil Aviation is conducting a thorough check of the planeto find out the extent of damage and the reasons behind the accident,"Captain Hefni pointed out.
"An alternative flight was madeavailable for the passengers who are mainly Egyptians after three-hourdelay," he added.
In a related development a technical failure atone of the engines of a Jeddah-bound plane belonging to the SaudiArabian Airlines resulted in a five-hour delay of the flight pending theprovision of an alternative plane, sources of CAI said.
Thepilot reported the technical problem shortly before the take-off. The311 passengers were asked to get down and wait at the transit hall.
Asthe problem was not easy to be resolved soon, an alternative flight wasmade available to the passengers, the sources added.(KUNA)
