The Japanese Government has extended 432 million dollars in contribution to a 220-megawatt Wind Farm Project in the Gabal el-Zeit area, on the Western Coast of the Gulf of Suez in Egypt.
Egyptian Electricity and Energy Minister - Hassan Younis, met Sunday with Japan's Ambassador , Kaoru Ishikawa, whose term of duty ended in June.
"The meeting reflects a personal appreciation of the Japanese Ambassador's efforts to strengthen Egyptian-Japanese relations", Younis said.
"During his term of office, the Japanese government has supported several projects in Egypt, including the Zaafarana venture, located at the Red Sea coast, to generate electricity from wind", the Minister said.
"Japan has also assisted in carrying out a Solar Power Plant of a 140-megawatt capacity in Korimat, one of the fourth largest projects worldwide, he said.
Last month, the World Bank awarded Egypt a $220mn loan to support the Wind Power Development Project, which aims to develop the infrastructure and business models needed to scale up wind power in the country.
It will include the funding of the construction of transmission lines to connect Egypt’s first wind farm, the 250mw Gabal el-Zait project, to the National Grid.
“Some of the world’s best wind power resources are in Egypt, especially in the areas of the Gulf of Suez, where at least 7.2gw could be potentially developed by 2022. This is in addition to a further 3.0gw on the West and East Banks of the Nile,” the World Bank said in a statement.
