Egyptians consume a total of 13.7 million tons of wheat per year, making them the world's largest wheat consumers, according to a study issued recently by the Agricultural Research Centre.
The study listed the factors that tend to affect national wheat consumption, including average per capita incomes, population size and demographic considerations.
The study also found that Egypt uses 1.3 million tons of wheat annually, which is valued at LE390 million on animal fodder and also that 609,000 tons of wheat is wasted by households every year.
It went on to note that wheat consumption rose by 196 percent between 1981 and 2007, pointing out that 46 percent of the commodity was used to produce subsidized bread.
