Egypt (Cairo) - As the state anticipates the holy month of Ramadan, the Egyptian Tourist Authority is launching the Ramadan Lantern (Fanous) Festival on Monday.  This is with the aim of encouraging tourists to visit from Arab countries, specifically Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Libya, the UAE, and Kuwait.

A statement by the authority said that the festival is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, the National Cultural Centre, Egypt Opera House, together with a host of other authorities, a number of tourism agencies and hotels.

Fireworks, folkloric dances and other performances mark the launch of the festival. Part of Monday's festivities is sailing of a group of sailboats from across the Grand Hyatt to the Qasr El Nile Bridge, raising the festival's posters and flags.

The official carrier for the event is Egypt Air.  It is decorating its aircraft for the festival, and introducing travellers to the spirit of the month, even before their arrival.

Upon landing, visitors are to be greeted by decorated streets and public venues all across Cairo and Alexandria.

The authority's statement pointed out that efforts by a host of state bodies, business institutions and the private sector are being used to make the season a success.  It also commented that a major media campaign will promote the festival in the Arab region.  It will utilize printed media, as well as Internet adverts.
