Egypt's constitutional amendment committee headed by Tarek al-Bishry said the committee is currently preparing its final draft of the amended articles and that it would be presented to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) within the next couple of days.
Judicial sources said that the committee agreed on removing Article 179 which is related to the new terrorism law and implies that suspects can be arrested, investigated and monitored without judicial supervision, approval or warrants.
The same sources said the committee agreed that Article 88, which concerns the supervision of parliamentary elections, would be amended to ensure judicial supervision over the voting process.
“An independent committee composed of judges will be responsible for supervising the elections,” said the sources.
The sources said that the committee is still deciding on article 77 concerning the conditions of presidential terms. According to the source, it has not yet been decided whether to limit each term to four years or five.
