Russian wheat returning to Egypt
Egypt on Sunday received a shipment of Russian wheat, the first since 2009, following Egypt’s decision to ban the import of wheat from the country.
According to a source at Safaga Port, the shipment weighs 63,000 tons and is valued at LE83 million.
Agricultural and radioactive screenings of the shipment confirmed its suitability for human consumption, being free from radiation, impurities, dead insects or weed seeds that could be hazardous to Egyptian agriculture.
The Red Sea Directorate of Supply and Internal Trading began distributing the wheat to mills in Upper Egypt.
Meanwhile, ten ships laden with 450 tons of wheat and 35 tons of corn arrived at the port of Alexandria on Saturday, and are currently being unloaded.
