The Red Sea reserves authority saved an endangered turtle from death.
The Red Sea reserves authority saved an endangered turtle Monday from death north of Marsa Alam, Red Sea governorate.
Environmental researcher and chief of Marsa Alam natural reserves Ahmed Shawky said he received a report about a turtle in a state of fatigue found in Wadi Shagara in Marsa Alam.
Workers at the reserve immediately provided medical care and the turtle was transferred to a glass box for follow-up care.
Shawky said the turtle is a Hawksbill Sea Turtle or Eretmochelys imbricate. The reasons for the turtle’s sickness and its age will be determined in coordination with the Hurghada Science Institute.
The World Conservation Union classifies the Hawksbill as critically endangered. Hawksbill shells are often used for decorative purposes. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species outlaws the capture and trade of Hawksbill Sea Turtles and products derived from them.
