Late real estate tax declarations accepted

Finance Minister Youssef Boutros-Ghali said on Monday that his ministry will accept real estate tax declarations that are submitted after the deadline of 31 March, without levying any fines against late submitters.

"We don't want to collect fines as much as we aim to devise a map of our real estate assets to help us put down proper development plans in the future," Boutros-Ghali said.

So far the ministry has received 15 million declarations for more than 22 million pieces of real estate, which constitutes 75 percent of the ministry's projected target.

"There are 1000 ministry directorates nationwide that are open everyday until 10 PM to accommodate for the increasing turnout," Boutros-Ghali said.

Real Estate Tax Authority President Tareq Farrag said no backup documents are required for the declarations, in a further attempt to simplify the declaration process.
